Questions Related to Pressure Sensitive Adhesives, Questions Related to Formulating, Questions of a General Nature Questions about Products or Product Use What is NEOCAR®? NEOCAR® refers to our line of emulsion polymers that feature branched ester technology. Included in this line are NEOCAR® Latexes as well as NEOCAR® Acrylics. As compared to a vinyl acrylic, NEOCAR® Latexes have great exterior durability and alkali resistance. The hydrophobic nature of the latex provides acrylic like performance at competitive costs. Typical applications for NEOCAR® Latexes range from sealants and elastomerics, to masonry, stucco, and wood coatings. Included in this line are NEOCAR® Latex 2300 and 2535. NEOCAR Acrylics are unique products that have phenomenal water resistance. The extremely hydrophobic nature of NEOCAR® Acrylics provides styrene acrylic like water resistance but acrylic like exterior durability. Typical applications for NEOCAR® acrylics are wood and concrete stains and sealants where outstanding water resistance is needed. Included in this line are NEOCAR® Acrylic 820, 850 and 7660. back to top What defoamers do you recommend for use with ENCOR™ 626? Several defoamers have been found to work successfully with ENCOR™ 626 in semigloss formulations for interior and exterior use. These defoamers are effective over a wide range of formulations, including tint bases. Defoamer concentrations of 4-6 pounds per 100 gallons of paint are required; the exact concentration is dependent on the formulation. The defoamers listed below did not detract from gloss or color acceptance in these ENCOR™ 626 based paints. | Recommended Defoamers | Suppliers | | Dee Fo 3010 | Ultra Additives, Inc. | | Drew Plus L 464 | Ashland Chemical Co. Drew Industrial Division | | Colloid 640 and 643 | Rhodia Coatings and Construction Materials | | Foam Blast 392 | Ross Chemical, Inc. | | Patco 841 | Patco Defoamers Additives American Ingredients Co. | back to top Can you recommend a defoamer for a coating based on NEOCAR® 2535? Drewplus L-419, has worked well at a level of 1 to 3 pounds per 100 gallons. The Drewplus L-419 should be added in the grind to minimize the appearance of film defects caused by silicone defoamers. back to top I want to make a low odor interior paint. Can you recommend a system with good touch up properties? ENCOR™ 300 represents new technology with the ability to achieve low and zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compound). Several low VOC plasticizers were found to be compatible with ENCOR™ 300. Enhanced low-temp touch up was achieved while maintaining the low odor of the paint. These plasticizers associate very well with the polymer, making the film softer allowing it to have better flexibility and enhanced film formation. The plasticizers listed below exhibited very good touch up properties. The recommended usage is from 1- 3%, based on latex solids. They are usually added in the let down of the formulation and can be pre-mixed with cosolvents, thickeners, or stabilizers for ease of incorporation. | Plasticizer | Supplier | | Citroflex A-2 (Morflex) | Morflex | | Citroflex 4 (Morflex) | Morflex | | FX - 511 (Condea Servo) | Condea Servo | back to top How can I make a water-based coating for concrete that can compete with two component epoxy systems? Branched ester technology can provide the answer. These new polymers have the hydrophobicity of styrene acrylics along with the UV resistance of acrylics. NEOCAR® Acrylic 850 is a nanoparticle size latex. Upon ambient curing, this latex self-crosslinks. It is designed for clear sealers or coatings for wood, masonry and cement. The marriage of branched ester and acrylic technologies provides for outstanding water whitening resistance and UV resistance. The ambient crosslinking further enhances water and chemical resistance. Garage floor coatings based on NEOCAR® Acrylic 850 have shown equal if not better hot tire pickup and chemical resistance to two component epoxy systems. Coatings based on NEOCAR® Latex 850 are low odor, low VOC, and much easier to handle than these other systems. back to top What products does Arkema Coating Resins offer for low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) applications? We have several products that were specifically designed for low VOC applications. - ENCOR™ 300 is a new generation vinyl acrylic designed for low VOC, high scrub, interior flat paints. With this 55% solids latex, high scrub paints can be made down to zero VOC. The use of this product is not limited to low VOC. Higher conventional VOC levels can enhance performance.
