SP Technology

Improving processing time and scorch resistance of organic peroxide based curing systems are constant objectives that focus on productivity increase and consequently a decrease in cost.

The improvement of processing time requires higher reactivity of the curing system, whereas an improvement in scorch resistance requires lower reactivity. To address this contradictory challenge, Arkema has developed two novel scorch protection technologies that can be applied to all peroxide grades.

"SP" (Scorch Protected) technology provides outstanding scorch protection and does not cause any loss of cross-linking density.

The first grade of this "SP" family is Luperox® F40M-SP organic peroxide, a homogeneous dispersion of Luperox® F organic peroxide on a calcium carbonate and EPM carrier. In a standard EPDM compound, the scorch time of Luperox® F40M-SP organic peroxide, measured at 125oC, is three times longer than the traditional Luperox® F40 organic peroxide.

The performances of these new organic peroxide families provide great advantages at each step of the transformation process.

  • At the compounding stage, the outstanding scorch protection offers the possibility to speed up the process by increasing the mixing speed. Typically, the compounding temperature can be increased by 10-15oC with no additional scorch threat. It is even possible to go to a one- pass mixing operation when not applicable with standard grades.
  • At the processing stage, the scorch protection of the new grades will be a benefit for the injection molding process.
