Organic Peroxides
As one of the world's leading suppliers of organic peroxides, Arkema manufactures and markets azo initiators, diacyl peroxides, dialkyl peroxides, hydroperoxides, ketone peroxides, peroxydicarbonates, peroxyesters, and peroxyketals marketed under the brand name Luperox® organic peroxides.

An Organic Peroxide is a molecule containing at least two oxygen atoms, single bonded together. The general structure is:

This kind of bond has the property to be quite easy to break under the action of heating (homolitic scission), leaving on each oxygen one unpaired electron, called free radical. Free radicals are able to promote certain chemical reactions such as:

Arkema has expertise in synthetic technologies including: esterification, acylation, alkylation, halogenation, free radical reactions, polymerization reactions, and reactive processing, and most recently, a new process called Bloc Builder®, that allows the control of free radical polymerizations.

Our primary applications include polymerization, hardening of unsaturated polyester resins, and reticulation or crosslinking.

We have introduced more new organic peroxides than the rest of the industry combined, including the first peroxide for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) -- which quickly became the major initiator used in manufacturing PVC resin.
