Thiochemicals ResearchOverview | Key Contributions Thiochemicals Research is largely based on the organic and inorganic chemistry of sulfur. Many of our products (dimethyl sulfide, methanesulfonic acid, dimethylsulfoxide) occur naturally as part of the atmospheric, marine and terrestrial sulfur cycles. We build on decades of experience in sulfur and nitrogen chemistry to develop new products and solutions for nearly every major segment of the chemical industry. In close cooperation with manufacturing, process technology, and analytical and systems research, we play a key role in the development of new, improved manufacturing processes for our products. The Thiochemicals group manufactures intermediates for agricultural products such as methyl mercaptan and acrolein, ultimately used in the production of methionine supplements for animal feeds. In addition to providing intermediates and building blocks for other more complex materials, we focus a large part of our efforts on developing technology-based solutions to solve customer problems. Based on our fundamental understanding of these chemistries, we are constantly discovering new ways to use existing molecules and transforming them into commercial opportunities. Our sulfur and amine products serve as intermediates in the pharmaceutical industry and as additives for steam crackers and refineries, coatings, polymerization, rubber cross-linking, and water treatment, among others. Newly developed products and innovations that have increased our markets include: Paladin® - novel pre-planting soil fumigant for control of weeds, soil-borne plant pathogens, and nematodes. DMDS Evolution® E2 - a lower odor version of Dimethyl disulfide used in the steamcracking and refinery markets DMSO EVOL™ - replacement for more toxic polar aprotic solvents Scaleva® - environmentally-friendly descaling agent for dairies, breweries and industrial/institutional cleaners Biomethionine - supply of key raw material compatible with bio-based manufacture of methionine Visit our Thiochemicals business unit page for additional information.
