   Orgasol - FAQ

How do Orgasol® Powders improve abrasion resistance?

Orgasol® powder has a spherical particle shape, which prevents abrasive materials from wearing the surface of coatings and varnishes. Additionally, polyamides have a low coefficient of friction and are well known for their abrasion resistance.

How does Orgasol® powder reduce gloss?

Orgasol® powder can be used as a flattening or matting agent when added to formulations. The presence of Orgasol® powders near the surface will create a light deflection. The gloss reduction is dependent on the ratio of the average particle size (APS) of Orgasol® powder to the dry thickness of the coating and also the concentration of Orgasol® powder into the formulation.

Can Orgasol® powders be incorporated into glossy finishes?

Absolutely. Orgasol® powder is compatible with glossy finishes when a small percentage is added to formulations.

Is it possible to achieve very low gloss with Orgasol® powder?

Yes. Orgasol® powder, combined with silica, produces very low gloss (<10).

Can Orgasol® powder be used to create a textured effect?

Yes. The “average particle size (APS) of Orgasol® powder/ dry thickness” ratio, along with the concentration of Orgasol® powder in the formulation, will determine the textured effect. When the coating thickness is smaller than the powder APS, the larger particles produce a bumpy surface and the surface roughness increases. The tight particle size distribution ensures uniformity and consistency of the textured effect.

What is the impact of Orgasol® powder on formulation stability?

Orgasol® powder has a good impact on formulation stability. Unlike PTFE powder, the low density of Orgasol® powder prevents it from settling out of the mixture.

Can Orgasol® powder be used in UV or EB formulations?

Orgasol® powder can be used in any kind of formulation such as water-based, solvent-borne, 100% solid UV or EB curable systems. In 100% solid UV curable formulations, Orgasol® powder does not impact the viscosity of the formulation while providing low gloss and abrasion resistance.

What resins can be used with Orgasol® powder?

Orgasol® powders are currently used as additives in a wide variety of resins or binders such as alkyds, polyester, polyurethane, acrylic and epoxy. Orgasol® powders are beneficial in all formulations (water-based, solvent-borne, 100% solid UV or EB curable). However, the best results have been obtained with urethane-based coatings.

Can Orgasol® powder be easily dispersed in water-based applications?

Orgasol® powders may be easily dispersed into water with different kinds of wetting agents. If your current water-based system already includes wetting agents, simply pre-disperse the Orgasol® powder. If you are using a co-solvent in your water–based system, pre-disperse the Orgasol® powders in the co-solvent and then introduce it into the water-based system.

Can Orgasol® powder be incorporated into solvent-based applications?

Orgasol® powders have excellent chemical resistance, making them compatible with most solvent systems. Simply add the Orgasol® powders at the end of the mixing phase, allowing enough time for the solvent to wet the Orgasol® powders.

Does Orgasol® powder improve anti-slip properties in flooring as well as improve cleanability?

Yes. Orgasol® powder is often used for this purpose in sports and industrial flooring. By using a large particle size compared to the coating thickness, a rough texture can be obtained to produce anti-slip and easy-to-clean properties.

Can Orgasol® powder improve scuff resistance on low gloss surfaces?

Yes. Adding Orgasol® powders significantly improves scuff resistance, especially when the average particle size (APS) of the Orgasol® powder is greater than the film thickness. The larger the APS of the polyamide powder, the more difficult it is to mark the surface with a rubber heel and the easier it is to clean with a sponge.

How is film clarity affected by the addition of Orgasol® powder to clear surfaces?

The effect on film clarity of clear surfaces depends on the choice of Orgasol® powder used and the amount used. Adding up to 15% of Orgasol® powder does not change the clarity of the clear surface.

Can Orgasol® powder be used to control the coefficient of friction between two surfaces?

Orgasol® powders have a low coefficient of friction and can be used to lower the coefficient of friction between surfaces. Orgasol® improves anti-blocking properties. For example, when added to a polyurethane varnish on a rubber gasket, it can minimize the coefficient of friction between rubber and glass, such as between car windows and rubber window seals.
