Arkema Methanesulfonic Acid (MSA) offers an outstanding combination of properties for use in hard surface cleaning and removal of lime and metallic (iron) scales.  The following outlines the results of Arkema studies on its use in cleaning applications, and provides relevant physical and chemical properties for MSA and its salts.

Strong Acidity		Promotes rapid attack on carbonate and oxide scales
Forms high solubility salts		Enhanced dissolution allows better rinsing step without traces of salts
Non-foaming and not a hydrotype		Combine with cationic anionic or non-ionic surfactants.
Stable to most oxidizing agents		Formulate with H2O2 for disinfecting effect
Non-oxidizing		Minimize degradation of other formulation components
Low corrosivity to metals vs other acids		Less damaging to pipes and fixtures
Low toxicity and ecotoxicity		Dilute solutions safe for discharge to waste treatment facilities
